The Emphasizes On Clothing

Many of us love collectable fashion items and accessories such as dress, gowns, shoes and so on.  But, to be honest, we would prefer not to buy them from a secondhand shop.  However, also included is jewellery, which is also bought secondhand and proudly worn by some people.  Mind you, we know some people who buy most of their clothes from secondhand shops, but what they wear could never be described as collectable.

Early 1900s clothing emphasized splendor and glamour.  World War 2 imposed austerity.  But immediately after the war, Australia became fashion conscious, and in common with many other countries, was especially influenced by Christian Dior’s New Look, with its pinched waist and flared skirt.

The 1950s was a decade of elegance in this country, with clothes that included the cocktail dress, white gloves and a hat.  The end of the decade saw a rebellion by teenagers who wore miniskirts, no hats or gloves, and (horror) no stockings.

There was a moment, so called fashion anarchy, by the end of 1960s. Everywhere throughout the world miniskirts were worn beneath maxi coats.  Mothers dressed like daughters.  Some dressed in plastic (occasionally transparent) and others dressed to look like gypsies, wearing clothes made from natural fibers.

Bonhams mid-year 20th Century Design auction included a Pierre Cardin A-line coat (estimated at $400) and an Ossie Clark mini dress (estimated about $250).  Christie’s held their first Modern Design auction this year and included a 1953 dress of figured rayon by Digby Morton (estimated about $400).  Today’s clothes collectors are interested in three main features: design, manufacture, color.

Clothes by well-known designers are, not surprisingly, the most collectable. Australian designers of special note include Hall Ludlow, Beril Jents and Zara Dickins.

Since tens of years ago, all capital cities have shops that specialize in fashion collectables.  Most of the time you may have to ask to see their better clothes because they are sometimes kept in storage so as to preserve them from damage.

Collectable clothes should be dry-cleaned before storing.  Metal buttons, fastenings and so on should be wrapped with acid-free tissue, and more acid-free tissue should be used to pad the clothing.  Labels should be carefully preserved.
