GETTING THE MOST OF YOUR SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM

When it comes to solar hot water, most people don’t realise just how important the location of their system is.

Getting these basics right is an absolute must in order to maximise the efficiency of a solar hot water system, Perth solar company, Ureco says.

It is also believed that up to thirty per cent of the energy used to heat the water in a solar hot water system goes to waste due to heat being lost from the tank and from the associated pipework – yet another reason to make sure of optimum location and installation.

So let’s look at some ‘hot’ tips for maximising your solar hot water investment:-

It’s all about the location

North-facing panels are generally the most efficient, and the best tilt angle will depend on where you live.

The pipework

Careful design to ensure that pipework is kept to a minimum will help your hot water system operate optimally – so try and locate the tank and the panels as close together as possible and nearby the main wet areas.

Are trees nearby?

To get the most out of your solar heating, make sure that the panels are located in an area where they won’t be shaded by buildings or overhanging trees.

Check location meets council regulations

Some local councils will have noise restrictions in place, so it’s important to check the positioning of your solar hot water system (especially heat pumps) before installation.

Many companies will claim to offer  the ‘best’ solar hot water systems, Perth-based Ureco say, but it’s actually the location of the system that plays the major part in determining how much solar heating is actually generated and how efficient the system is.
