Here’s what’s true: All of these things are important (OK, perhaps not the software, but the other things). You must be diligent and smart about business and creative if you want to get ahead. Naturally, if you are unable to distinctly communicate with customers and clients, none of the rest of it will actually matter. Good communication means more than merely coming up with a terrific sales page. All you need for that is the money to employ a seasoned copywriter. Good communication is more than having a gorgeous site with a lengthy FAQ area. You can get those by employing good designers and writers. If you want to be a good communicator, you must develop interpersonal communication skills, not merely direct copywriting. So what should you do? 1. Reply to each and every email you receive within 24 hours of it hitting your inbox. We aren’t trying to joke with you. You don’t have to write a novel in the body of every last email. All you need to do is inform the sender that you have read the email and will be responding to it in more detail shortly. It is a good idea to include a portion of the email that references something the the other person has written. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the automated replies that other online marketers employ. 2. Answer your phone. Don’t screen your calls. When your telephone is ringing, pick it up by the third ring. Make sure you do this even if the Caller ID tells you that the call is from a person that you really do not wish to talk to. Here is the one catch to this rule. You don’t have to answer your calls around the clock. Instead, simply set clear “business” hours during which you plan on being available to take calls. Put these hours up on your website and state them in your voice mail message. And, finally, always return your calls. 3. Check with people to be sure that they received your memos, emails, letters, etc. This shows them that you care about your communication with them. It will endear you further if you include something like, “Is there anything that I can be more clear about?” so that, if they have questions, you can answer them.
