AEG, the electronics company was formed in the last decades of the nineteenth century but over a century later it had ended production and the brand became AEG-Electrolux. They’re a leading worldwide makers of home appliances and electronic goods, that include industrial products and power tools. In the latest poll, a member of Which? the independent advice service for consumers said that her 1969 AEG Turnamat washing-machine is still going strong today – evidence of German craftsmanship and engineering. However, in 2011 long lifespans for domestic appliances are uncommon. And when you consider their heavy and regular use washing machine repair callouts can be a widespread occurrence. Because washers do so many things, defects may be harder to identify than they are to fix. For a household appliance, it is a pretty complex piece of kit – with special timing cycles that drive valves, motors that turn water on, drain water and spin the tub, and influence the water temperature.

There are numerous things that can break down on a washing machine including:

1. Leaking door – most likely a split or ageing door seal.
2. Water will not load – the most common cause of a washer not taking any water in is either a kinked hose or the tap becoming faulty whereby you turn it on but the valve inside does not turn. Another common cause is the tap being accidentally switched off and folks not recognising this. Other causes can be water valve, programme control or wiring. Take a look at the error code by looking at the machine’s manual.
3. Machine won’t drain – this can be caused by a blockage somewhere, a pump failure, or an electrical short that stops the pump from operating.

Some small defects can be solved by yourself for example, rinsing the laundry soap dispenser drawer if there is a build-up of mould and the softener tray fills with water. If your clothing has a musty or mouldy aroma, you should run the washing machine empty with the hottest possible cycle with a cup of household bleach or Clorox. This is an increasing problem as wash powders are made to be run on lower temperature cycles. Do not try of mend your machine if you get electric shocks from it or the drum or paddles are broken. Book a qualified engineer when it comes to fixing such an expensive appliance, especially where electrical currents are an active component.

Householder attitudes to repairing or replacing domestic appliances are changing, less get fixed when they break down, but repairing rather than replacing has better green credentials. Make certain the folks you call to fix washing machines are manufacturer-approved engineers, with a speedy response time to your booking.
