A skip is a large, open top container used traditionally by building firms to deposit the debris that they produce. Once full, it is then removed by a purpose built wagon to a landfill site or recycling centre where the contents are deposited. Skips are also often hired for a fixed period of time by private individuals carrying out work on their homes.

Home improvement is almost a way of life now for property owners, but it invariably results in waste. Small amounts can just go into your rubbish bin, but larger amounts are not so easy to handle. This is where a skip can prove invaluable.

It’s important to choose the right size of skip for the purpose. If in doubt, go for the larger size; you don’t want the wasted time and expense of leaving a job half-done and having to reorder a second skip. Bear in mind that there is often a fill level on the skip over which you must not go. This prevents the load from becoming unstable in transit.

If possible, arrange for the skip to be put on your own driveway, as putting it on the public highway requires a permit from the local council. This permit is normally arranged by the skip provider, although some councils do require that the customer applies to them directly.

There are a number of statutory, as well as local, regulations that you need to be aware of when you park a skip on the public highway. The basic rules are that the skip should not exceed five metres in length by two metres in width, it should be guarded by at least three traffic cones and illuminated at all four corners by night. It should not cover any manholes and the name and telephone number of the hire company should always be clearly visible somewhere on the skip.

Please be aware that there are certain things that may not be disposed of in a skip. These include electrical appliances such as televisions; refrigerated appliances such as fridges, freezers and air conditioners; hazardous construction materials like plasterboard and asbestos; pollutants such as paint, solvents and automotive fluids; and pressurised items like aerosols.

A good skip hire company should be able to tell you exactly how it intends to process your material and tell you precisely what its recycle rate is. With a normal load, the absolute maximum that should end up in landfill is 20 per cent. The company should hold a valid waste removal licence and, if it processes the waste in its own waste transfer station, an environmental permit.

The final stage of the process sees your waste being separated out into recyclable and non-reusable items. Wood, cardboard, paper, plastics, metals, rubble, soil and glass can all be reprocessed to make new products. Green waste can either be composted or converted into green fuel. Only the bare minimum should actually end up in the ground.

When you are doing the big spring clean and getting rid of all the clutter from your home, you will want to get rid of as much as possible. You’ll think of hiring a skip to quickly get rid of the junk, but you’re worried about what you are supposed to put in it. Can you get rid of the kitchen sink?

The vast majority of your garden waste can be put into the skip. At lot of common household rubbish that you would normally put in your bin can also be disposed of in it. The only issue is if it will risk anyone’s health and safety. If you think it will then you should seek an alternative way to get rid of it. There are clear regulations for the disposal of waste, from the Environment Agency.

The kitchen sink and your bathroom suite can all be thrown into the skip. It can be joined by general household and garden waste. You can get rid of grass cuttings, soil that you have dug up, the kitchen work surface and the general waste from the kitchen.

The rules governing skip usage prevent the inclusion of: TVs, computer screens, refrigerators, freezers, paints, any liquids, oil, diesel, gas, tyres, asbestos, fluorescent lighting tubes, batteries, gas cylinders, medical waste, plasterboard, paint tins and any solvent.

These hazardous materials can be safely disposed of in other places. To find out how to dispose of these, you should contact your local authority. You can find the phone number and email address for the local authority online.

If you hire a skip, you should consider where it be housed. You may need to obtain a skip licence to have it on a public road. You should check with your local council. Most of the time the skip hire company will be responsible for obtaining a licence or a permit, but you should check if you need to do it yourself.

When you have hired a skip, you must not put it on the pavement. If you have managed to store the skip completely on private land, you will not need a licence. The same rules apply for hippobags, skip bags and traditional skips. When you put the skip on the road, you might be asked to use safety night-lamps and markings to aid other road users. You should also display the name, phone number and address of the hire company.

As soon as your skip is full, it will be taken away by the hire company. They will send your waste to either a landfill or try and recycle what they can. They might send it via a large recycling centre or even recycle the waste themselves. You can ask your hire company where your waste is going and they will tell you.

The cost of your skip will be based on its weight and not how full you have loaded the skip. If you are getting rid of bricks and soil, it will cost you more than if you are trying to get rid of paper and cardboard. The fees are entirely based on the weight of your skip, you should consider this when loading your skip.

When you think you need a St Helens skip hire there are a couple of things you need to consider first. While it seems like it should just be as simple as making a phone call, there are some other things you need to think about first. By taking the time to plan ahead you will be more likely to get the skip you need, not what you just think you need and you may even save some money. Commonly people get a skip that is bigger than what they really need and if they had planned a little they could have avoided this. There are a few things you should know then before you go about getting your St Helens skip hire ordered and delivered.

One thing that is important to remember is that you need to have a place to put the skip when it is delivered. You need a driveway or some sort of an easement to put the skip in when it is delivered and if you don’t have that you could be in trouble. Most of the time you can’t put the skip in the street. Most cities won’t allow for this or if they do, you’ll probably need to get a permit for it first. If it is determined that you don’t have some place to put the skip then you may just have to face the fact that you can’t have one.

Looking for skip hire around: skip hire luton skip hire Sheffield

If you can have a skip then you need to decide what size will be right for you. There are a variety of skip sizes. The cost is often determined by the size of the skip you need. This means that you don’t want to get a skip that is any bigger than your job requires or you’ll be paying for more skip than you’ll use, which is just a big waste of money.

Finally, you need to be clear about how long you think you’ll need the skip for. Just like they charge for size, the number of days you have the skip can also impact the price.
