Boston is the largest city in New England and is a cultural heart for the location. The town is famous for old, twisting cobblestone roads, the Red Sox, and a long tradition of Irish Heritage. To be able to experience everything this wonderful city has to offer, take some time to understand and know clubs and places you can go to practice outdoors activities in Boston

Climbing

Rock and ice climbers are in striking distance of areas to ply their sports from the greater Boston area. The Quincy Quarries are within a 30 minute drive from much of the city and offer routes from 5.6 to 5.11. The Arnold Arboretum offers chances for bouldering moves within the region, and the Castle Rocks have rock routes for most levels, including bouldering. Indoor climbing is also available at 1 or 2 rock gyms across the town and its suburbs.

Skiing

The proximity to Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Berkshires makes sure skiers get masses of terrain to hit the hills. Cross country trails are at the Weston Ski Track on the western edge of the city. Downhill terrain is located just outside the northern edge of the town at the Blue Hills or the Nashoba Ski Areas. If you want full on resort skiing, point the vehicle north to Vermont or New Hampshire. There are ski clubs in Boston that organize inexpensive packages that include transport, letting you mix and mingle with fellow snow buffs. The Boston Ski and Sports Club has plenty of information on upcoming events and booked conferences.

Kayaking

Boston is already widely known for scull racing along the Charles River. Touring kayaks and canoes are often seen sliding across the brook, and due to the coastal location of the city, sea kayakers can drop the boat in the water during the summer and paddle along the rocky New England shore. Keep an eye out for whales and seals during the months of summer when out paddling.

Bicycling

Road cycling is abundant in the regions surrounding the city. Blue Hills Cycling Club offers group rides and organized activities in the northwestern suburbs of Boston. Biking in Boston during autumn is the best way to see the style of the New England leaf colours. Mountain bikers can get their thrills by driving to Callahan State Park in Framingham, MA or to the Blue Hills. Lots of the trails are shared with walkers and runners, so take care and follow posted rules and laws. No matter your bicycling preference there is plenty of biking in Boston to keep even the most die-hard cyclist contented. Lots of the trails in the region are “MUTS” – Multi Use Trails. This indicates that the biking trails are also hiking trails in Boston. Get your boots out, or your trail runners and milk the hiking trails in Boston.
