It’s not going to be easy house-training a Shih Tzu puppy – if it’s your first time doing this you might learn about it the hard way. That’s because the usual punishment can you can dish out to a medium-sized dog may not work on this breed. Perhaps this owes to the Shih Tzu’s personality, but punishing it may result in its shutting down and being less sociable. Worse, it may do the exact opposite of what you’re trying to train it not to do.

A Shih Tzu puppy will relieve itself when it can, and will, at the start, have little control over when that happens. The best you can do is to observe it and rush it off outside your house or to an area indoors with potty pads, or that’s covered in newspapers. You’re going to have to do a lot of fire-fighting in the beginning, as this puppy tends to do its business every few hours. It’s not always possible to be there at home, to tend to your dog, so that potty area is going to be worth it when you set it up.

Should you watching over your pet, be aware of some specific signs that it’s going to poop or pee. It will usually be sniffing the ground walking in circles, or crying. The moment you see these signs, pick up the puppy up gently and rush to the newspaper area, or outside.

Keeping to a schedule is another way. After a nap and after they eat are two of the usual times when you can expect it to relieve itself. The goal is to show the puppy it will always be brought to the potty area, so that in time it will do so on it’s own accord. If that happens, that can’t be a bad thing – some pets don’t even do well with this. So should you see your pup making an effort to hold its pee or poop in until it makes it to the potty area, you want to praise your pup to let it know you want to keep seeing the same thing next time.

You need to lavishly praise your puppy ever time it does the right thing. And this brings us to the problem personality the Shih Tzu has – good luck if you can make this breed do what you want. A dog like that is known for being difficult to train by punishment, instead it has to want to keep doing what it likes to do, so that means positive reinforcement for when it pees and poops in the right spot.

Over time, you’ll see an effort, your pup will be trying to run to the potty area, or whine to get outdoors, and this you have to reward. This, of course, is not going to happen, magically, overnight. You can do what many veteran Shih Tzu owners do: they plan and maintain activities, routines, that create opportunities for the dog to relieve itself in ways you can manage the clean up, and then they praise the dog for doing what it I’d.
