It would be difficult to disagree that your health and safety is one of the most important duties that an employer has towards an employee. However, it is also a field laden with confusion and is a subject that many people have very little knowledge of.

One of the main reasons, there is so much confusion surrounding health and safety, is the confusing yet common terminology used within the subject. Two of the most common acronyms are IOSH and NEBOSH. Both IOSH and NEBOSH are companies which base their services around health and safety qualifications.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health also known as IOSH, is a registered charity, offering training courses in health and safety. It is the largest health and safety membership scheme within the world and works in close conjunction with schools and businesses, to promote more effective health and safety standards.

IOSH aims to promote effective health and safety standards within the workplace and provides training and guidance to assist companies to achieve such high standards. Training and guidance can be provided by enrolling upon one of their courses with the outcome of achieving a recognised qualification, or by merely downloading one of their regular guidance notes. IOSH runs numerous campaigns to promote their aim. In addition, IOSH can undertake property examinations to identify any potential health and safety risks and to advise regarding the implementation of any necessary control measures.

NEBOSH is also a registered charity and is an abbreviated name for the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. As the name suggests, NEBOSH practices as an examination body. It also sets the syllabuses and methods of assessments for students.

NEBOSH does not provide the courses for studying, but is an exam board and sets out the necessary specifications and requirements to succeed in the examinations. There are many course providers offering a NEBOSH course to study and such course providers extend to over 33 countries. One company offering courses to head for a NEBOSH qualification is IOSH. Approximately 30,000 students sit NEBOSH exams on a yearly basis.

NEBOSH offers three types of examination and assessment level. Firstly there is the award, which is the most basic qualification. An award shows that a student has a good basic grasp of the knowledge of the health and safety principles. This is often used as a stepping stone to the more advanced qualifications. Then there is the certificate. A certificate shows a wider understanding of health and safety and offers an opportunity to study an area of health and safety specific to your workplace, such as health and safety within a work environment that frequently deal with gas. Lastly, there is the most advanced qualification namely the diploma. NEBOSH has now developed internationally.

The main principle of both IOSH and NEBOSH is to promote qualifications within the health and safety subject, albeit they both have different roles to play in achieving this. However, it is as a result of the work put in by IOSH and NEBOSH that we experience the high health and safety standards that we do today.

As an industry leader in health and safety training we provide NEBOSH oil and Gas Certificate and consultations for a range industries.
