Anybody who has large scale security in a building should have a Physical Security Information Management system. This is known as PSIM. By using PSIM, all security applications and devices within an organization are brought together. It can bring together video networks, gates, sensors and access controls for instance. Organizations that use such a system are enabling their security personnel to identify and respond to any potential security problem much quicker. The system gives more control, more awareness of situations and more abilities to report. Five main capabilities are offered by these systems. Firstly, there is data collection from all the different security systems. Then, there is analysis, where it correlates data and events or alarms to prioritize situations. Verification is also offered by the system, which makes it possible for solutions to be offered. The next and perhaps most important part is resolution, which offers practical solutions based on existing policies, protocols, best practice and tools that are available. Last but certainly not least, the system reports on past issues and looks at suggestions for improvement.

So how does this work practically? Your organization, for instance, may have a infrared security beam, a CCTV system and an entrance barrier. Thanks to the system, the three systems can be monitored at the same time. Take, for instance, a report of someone who appears suspicious being in the building. Through your CCTV, you can see they are moving downstairs. Next, your turnstile systems pick up that someone has gone through. Once outside, they are picked up by the infrared security beams. You may think your system is fully secure, but it is actually highly impractical. You need to consider that you need to have a security operative that can switch from CCTV to turnstile to infrared beam at exactly the right moment. And they need to monitor the rest of the building as well. The Physical Security Information Management, however, can do all of this with great ease.

Once your building closes for the night, other security systems start to work. There are many businesses, for example, who use intrusion detection. Without such a system, it would mean each of the individual security systems need to be reviewed by your security staff every morning. As such, having this system can also save you time and resources. By using this system, you will not need as many members of staff in a security team, and they will be better equipped to actually respond to problems, rather than being stuck behind various monitors all day. All in all, it should be pretty clear why every building should have such a system.
