Pentax K-01 Body Review

Looking into its depths with the lens off, it is immediately obvious why the Pentax K-01 is so thick: The company had to maintain the same backfocus distance for the existing lenses, and the lack of a mirror makes it seem deeper than most. Other mirrorless manufacturers have chosen to create a new lens mount and a whole new range of lenses to allow for a shorter backfocus distance, and therefore created what we call a compact system camera (CSC). Pentax preferred to keep compatibility with their existing lens line while simply removing the mirror mechanism from the equation. As with the Q, Pentax has thought outside the box, and they may have missed the reason companies started producing mirrorless cameras: to make the overall camera and its lenses smaller.

With an ISO range of 100-25600, the K-01 was made to shoot quickly (it has a 5 frames per second Burst Mode) and in all lighting conditions. And thanks to the CMOS sensor, the K-01 shoots full HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second and 720p HD video at 60 frames per second, which means you can even shoot and edit slow motion (at 720p). Lastly, to admire your photos and video footage, PENTAX has included a 3.0-inch LCD screen with 920,000 pixels.

We were won over by the unconventional, minimalist design of the Pentax K-01, which is certainly bound to turn a few heads, although it may not be for everybody. The build quality felt particularly robust, if a little heavy, giving the feel of a premium camera but we felt that the grip could have been slightly more pronounced for a little added security.
