Katherine Gorge sits in the 292,000 Nitmiluk National Park and is made of has a grand total of 13 gorges, each one leading to the next. They were carved from sandstone by the Katherine Stream approximately one billion years back, so this is an ancient formation to say the least and not for the faint of heart. Electrifying is something of an understatement and this can sink in as you start exploring, by either boat, canoe or helicopter.

If you go by boat, be ready to leave your craft to stroll/climb over some rough terrain to the following gorge where another boat waits to take you through the next gorge “and so on and so on. Comfortable, garments, walking shoes and water bottles are strongly recommended. If you're a nature lover, you will not wish to leave the striking vistas and rugged, natural landscape. The gorges are lush, with waterfalls as well and loaded in flora and fauna.

For the fit and adventuresome, canoeing is the most effective way to explore this natural wonderland of never-ending surprises. There are lots of adventure activities on offer in Nitmiluk National Park. It is a refuge for nature lovers, with its craggy landscapes, dramatic waterfalls and lush gorges providing a surplus of flora and fauna, including the wierd freshwater crocodile. These are sometimes encircled by rangers nonetheless , you can never take too much care.

The visitor centre is a great place to have lunch and adapt to re-entry into the twenty first century again, as well as take in the freely available information as to the geological sorcery that happened to make the gorges.
