A home internet connection is the safest network you can be on. The security of your own network will protect you from cybercrime and theft. But if you’re not practicing proper security measures on your network, it’s no different than using a public connection. So protect your data by finding out how to properly secure your network.

If you don’t have one yet, install a firewall. Install both a firewall software and a physical firewall. Routers should also have their own firewalls for more protection. Change your network settings so it will only grant access to devices you’ve personally added or you recognize. Install anti-virus and always keep them updated. Viruses can enter your network and infect all the computers connected to it. For your passwords, keep them random and unexpected. Make use of special characters, uppercase and numbers. Use as many characters as you to make it strong and unbreakable. Don’t forget to change your modem’s default username and password.

Encrypt all the sensitive information in your computer for protection. For computers with multiple users, use only one account at a time. Switch off the other accounts when not in use. Only use remote management when necessary and disable it to avoid being susceptible to attacks. Change the settings for programs and application that automatically use the internet.

You can ask your provider if your internet connection is on NAT (Network Address Translation). With NAT, your devices will be using private IP addresses and will make you less visible to other networks. This is especially important for wireless connections. Also set your network to not respond to pings coming from other networks. A response to a ping will let others know that there is someone in a computer in the network that they can potentially hijack if they want. Be caution and learn how to protect yourself from an attack. Last and final tip, upgrade your modem and software every now and then and always keep them up-to-date.
