When coming to the city of Edinburgh, you don’t have to rely on public transport to get about. The city is heavily pedestrianised due to the central location of its museums and monuments. The city is an amalgam of impressive gothic architecture, castles and cheap hotels. If you feel the need to take a bus, it’s reassuring to know that there are regular bus journeys from Princes Street to the centre of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh hotels are conveniently located near some of the city’s main attractions. Princes Street Gardens sits close to the city’s main train station, Edinburgh Waverley, and provides its visitors with opportunities for luxurious walks among the flora. Other tourist attractions worth photographing are the Ross Fountain and the Scott monument built to commemorate that Scottish literary giant, Sir Walter Scott. Unfortunately the Edinburgh tram system which was begun in 2008 is still not complete yet, so it’s best to take the bus, walk or even hire a bike and cycle. There is also a park and ride scheme of some merit, allowing motorists to park at nearby locations, Hermiston and Ingliston. Attracting an amazing 500 car drivers a day, it allows the commuter a stress free ride into the heart of Edinburgh.

The largest arts festival in the world, The Edinburgh Fringe doesn’t require you to catch any transport in order to view it. Shows are performed during four weeks in August, on the doorstep of Edinburgh hotels. The Edinburgh Fringe also presents one of the most revered awards, the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, to those performers the committee thought were outstanding. Winners of the award recently have been Steve Coogan, Lee Evans and Dylan Moran.

One good thing about Edinburgh is that because a lot of the attractions are located within the city centre, you don’t need transport in order to travel from one to the next. If you want to explore the fine Lothian scenery, it’s advisable to book hotels on the city outskirts. As well as many man-made attractions, there are also a number of natural attractions in the area like Arthur’s Seat. Regarded by many as a possible location for the fabled Camelot, Arthur’s Seat also gives one fantastic panoramic views of the city below. Getting to all parts of Edinburgh quickly and easily is made possible by the extensive rail network within the city.
