At the rate Information Technology is going, it’s not unlikely that gadgets we deem savvy today will evolve into something unrecognizable. Maybe smaller, thinner, more compact, or who knows-just virtually there. These days, anything is possible. Technological innovation multiplies exponentially in speed every year. Manufacturers compete for supremacy by making their prices utterly attractive to customers. This benefits the market by unlocking an omnifarious range of gadgets and devices. Gradually, computers as we knew them a couple of decades ago are becoming obsolete, outdone by more advanced options- such in the case of laptops replacing desktops.

Desktops were extremely popular 2 decades ago. Branded ones such as Apple and IBM dominated the market in the mid-90’s. With how they are packaged, they can be customized and upgraded to suit the user’s personal requirements with an array of oem software. Assembly of desktops was rather simple. An average user could upgrade it part by part as he pleases without replacing the whole thing all together. The average household keeps a desktop for as long as 10 years. However, they were deemed generally pricey when they first entered the consumer electronics market. In late 1990’s to early 2000’s, the average desktop was pegged between USD 600 and USD 1000. Branded ones were 25% more expensive. Which created a large market for discount software.

The golden age of desktops began fading with the entry of mobile computers or laptops. Technological innovations have made it possible for manufacturers to lower cost without negatively impacting quality. During their first years in the market, they were already being sold for as low as USD500. As new players came into the field, said price became even more competitive. Today, you can grab a mini laptop for just about 250 bucks that will come loaded with the latest version of cheap windows 7. In terms of price, laptops are better than desktops.

An important feature of laptops that has also been making them marketable is that they’re portable. As consumers become more dependent to computers-at work and outside it- the need to access or use it anytime, anywhere has also increased. Laptops give them the luxury of mobility. Laptops are lightweight, dense and battery-powered. They have a handful of wireless features such as wi-fi and Bluetooth, making them perfect for mobile connectivity.

Laptops these days are just as powerful as desktop, with the exception of course of gaming and multimedia computers. Innovations in technology have made something so small so terribly powerful. By and large, basic specs such as speed, storage capacity, and hard drive are out of the question when comparing our 2 contenders. Specs get better by the month but the point is laptops can match whatever capacity a brawny, boxy, heavy machine can contain.

Another important factor to consider is the direction where other consumer electronic devices our going. Notice how they’re integrated much more easily with a laptop than with a desktop. For instance, most smart phones use wireless technology to transfer data, something that’s effortlessly compatible with the laptop’s built-in wireless capacity. Sure, a desktop can do this with the help of additional hardware and software, but then again that would entail more cost. In the end, the laptop is no doubt the more sustainable option.
