How are synthetic diamonds made?

The two most widely used industrial methods to manufacture diamonds are HPHT and CVD.  HPHT means High Pressure High Temperature method while CVD stands for Chemical Vapor Deposition which is an ultra-low but high temperature procedure.

The HPHT method is the one used by almost all synthetic diamond producers today (both for gem use and industrial use). Following the natural process on how nature creates diamond, a seed diamond and supply of carbon atoms is put under extreme pressure. The artificial pressure and temperature speeds up the natural process which typically takes millions of years.

As HPHT is used for gems and industrial diamonds, CVD is used to create smaller different diamond colors used for embedding.Carbons dissolved in gas is poured down on a seed which allows that diamond seed to attract more atoms to increase its size. As the carbon atoms pour on the seed, the atoms join the diamond structure making it grow.

 Grading with the 4 C’s

Remember what the 4 C’s are when buying an illustrious diamond.  It is highly important not to disregard these steps.The typical diamond cut has 58 facets. A diamond sparkles if there are more facets on its surface.

Contrary to public belief, there are diamond colors. Diamond colors have their own corresponding values. The most typical diamond color is yellow. Different diamond colors are graded in the GIA scale using a set of master stones. It is a tasking challenge to see the different diamond colors and graders are employed to do this comparison.

Purity is measured by clarity. Impurities exist among the bunch of carbon atoms that create the diamond.Carats are a unit of diamond weight. A carat weighs 0.2 grams while a point is a fraction of a carat.
