Kuranda is part of the Cairns Highlands and is usually about 5 C cooler than Cairns, making it a pleasant place to visit if you find the tropical heat slightly difficult. Once there, you will find many things worth doing, depending on your individual preferences.

The main attraction in Kuranda is it’s large markets, jam packed with all kinds of fascinating things. Kuranda is home to many local artisans and they generally sell at this market. You will find original paintings and prints, many galvanized by the reef and rainforest local environment. There is also a wide variety of original, hand-crafted jewellery for all budgets, including high end products that are unique and striking in design.

There are lots of cafeterias and trattorias both within the markets and also in the key street of Kuranda, which is the other area you'll be drawn to. You can simply spend a couple of hours rambling thru the various enticing and captivating shops in between cafeterias. There's a handcrafted candy factory there as well , for those with a sweet tooth and obviously, it is always well liked by youngsters.

If wildlife is more to your preference, you'll find the butterfly sanctuary literally alive with color and a memorable experience. The Barron River Falls are also close by and well worth a look, particularly if it's been raining and they are in full on, cascade mode. The local railway station which is still operational, is also worth a look, as well as a few photographs, to record it’s old fashioned personality.
