If you're taking a vacation in Western Australia, take a campervan hire Australia road trip and take a visit to Kalgoorlie, 700 kilometres east of Perth, it is the location of a gold rush in the 1880′s. It still is an active mining town and has an incredibly engaging history. Many of the old buildings are still there and supply a living look into the actions of the past.

The Super Pit Mine is a going concern and is a massive mine, producing roughly one tenth of the world's gold. It's a huge hole in the ground, measuring 3.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide. It produces an amazing 800,000 oz of gold annually and can offer a glance of the excitement and shock that gold appears to produce. It definitely produced lots of stories in the 1880′s as thousands chased the prospecting dream.

1 or 2 actually found it. One such prospector was Paddy Hannan, a redoubtable Irishman. Half Kalgoorlie is named after him: Hannan St, the Hannon Hotel, Hannan Beer and the Hannon Railway Station. Hannan Street boasts many pubs, clubs, cafes and cafes to help enjoy the meaning of a gold town. For most though, it had been a really troublesome existence and the Ghost town of Gwalia shows this.

Other gold towns in the neighborhood are Boulder and Leonora. A visit to the Australian Prospectors Hall of Fame contains heritage buildings as well as a prospector’s campsite. There are some superb buildings in Kalgoorlie and Boulder which testify to the cities former wealth, such as the Boulder City Hall and the Kalgoorlie Post Office.

The Stone Dispensary Museum has an amazing collection of antique surgical instruments, demonstrating an alternative aspect of nineteenth century life as experienced on the goldfields. Stay for 2 days and explore the goldfield mementos, as well as have a drink with of some of the current day eccentric, goldfield dreamers.

Kuranda Village is an old fashioned small spot at the very top of the Kuranda Range, just north west of Cairns. It will take in the region of forty 5 minutes on your campervan hire Australia trip to drive up the range all the way from Cairns, on a really breezy road and surrounded by rainforest most of the way. It is one of many places that can be simply reached as a day trip from Cairns and the drive up is really pleasing.

Kuranda is part of the Cairns Highlands and is usually about 5 C cooler than Cairns, making it a pleasant place to visit if you find the tropical heat slightly difficult. Once there, you will find many things worth doing, depending on your individual preferences.

The main attraction in Kuranda is it’s large markets, jam packed with all kinds of fascinating things. Kuranda is home to many local artisans and they generally sell at this market. You will find original paintings and prints, many galvanized by the reef and rainforest local environment. There is also a wide variety of original, hand-crafted jewellery for all budgets, including high end products that are unique and striking in design.

There are lots of cafeterias and trattorias both within the markets and also in the key street of Kuranda, which is the other area you'll be drawn to. You can simply spend a couple of hours rambling thru the various enticing and captivating shops in between cafeterias. There's a handcrafted candy factory there as well , for those with a sweet tooth and obviously, it is always well liked by youngsters.

If wildlife is more to your preference, you'll find the butterfly sanctuary literally alive with color and a memorable experience. The Barron River Falls are also close by and well worth a look, particularly if it's been raining and they are in full on, cascade mode. The local railway station which is still operational, is also worth a look, as well as a few photographs, to record it’s old fashioned personality. You are sure to have a wonderful day out, particularly if you find some bargains.
