I am getting so happy about our window boxes mostly in the spring and, you need to also , here’s why. Because, this is when we do a complete revamp of the window boxes, soil and substrates. But , before we leap into planting and just “set up” the planters here are one or two great tips to use when you are about to set up your window planters for the year. You can use these tips for Patio Planters also.

Tip 1. Lets start with nourishment and nutrition and strong roots! High quality potting soil is necessary to grow attractive plants. Healthy plants will reward you with gorgeous structure, foliage and lasting blooms. In addition , a quality plant will be really resilient to a disease. Potting soil with plant food is a good choice and will contain great nutriments. Further this packed soil will be less subject to foreign attackers. A big no-no is to just dig up some dust in your yard and put it in your patio planters or your window boxes and beg for the best? It will usually lead directly to more serious problems later that your plants may not survive.

Tip 2. Planting in window boxes is easy but since it’s a contained environment it might be definately what some weird things or fungi needs to get going and over run your boxes. There is nothing worse than putting effort into your planters and having them produce lack luster results or maybe worse, your plants die halfway thru the season.

Tip 3. If your boxes detach from your house take them to a sturdy table and have a look at the contents from the year before. Is there moss, weeds or other bizarre things growing? Or, does everything look perfect? When you have lifted up top layers and worked your way into the root masses you will have a good experience of the environment which your plants are growing in. Lets set you up to win this year.

Tip 4. Once your window boxes are cleaned up you can begin setting them up. Also , you are able to add other ingredients into the window boxes thus accelerating the food the plants can derive from the soil. Organic matter like Humus and Pete Moss are always good carefully as well when you originally set up your planters. Also using trace amounts of plant food in the season will help also.

Tip 5. The base layer of your patio planters and window boxes should be a high quality organic material. We use pine bark nuggets. This is the ideal base layer material for a nutrient rich layer. Then we splatter in some plant food. This is so that when the root system develops the root tips will ultimately find a special treat at the lower level of your boxes. Also the great thing about adding in a thick layer of corse bark nuggets is to control the amount of soil that works its way into the water reservoir if you have one and it will also help lighten up your boxes a touch. Filling up your water reservoir with mud is not something you’re trying to do.

Tip 6. We also put pine bark nuggets on top of the soil to add a nice texture and some moisture control as well. The biggest info of this manuscript is to recollect to take great care with your roots of the plants you introduce in to your window boxes. Because damaged roots won’t perform like roots left whole.

Tip 7. So as the plants root systems become established in your planters the nutrient levels will naturally lessen over time as the plants feed. At last a year later the available nutriments will be so used that your soil could become worthless. Further if your plants did not get planted in fresh potting soil you might spark a disease into your box that will produce plants with lack luster results that-is if the plants grow .

So , for us we have a tendency to start early. Sometime around the 1st week of March we begin planning what would like to try this year. But each year one thing remains the same. If you'd like to have a successful growing season your boxes have to be prepped accordingly, take it slow and I hope this article helps you think about your window boxes and patio planters in another way. Have a great season and remember your window boxes can be set up for year round seasonality for an extra additional splash of awesome to your business.
