The city of Miami, Florida isn't short on ways to entertain. As an extra advantage there are also several big league sports in Miami. With offerings in soccer, football, basketball and baseball, Miami has sports fans covered. With all of these options for top sports in Miami, a sports fan can’t go wrong whether they are looking for baseball in Miami or something else. Sports fans of professional sports teams in Miami should be very excited about the aptitude for the Heat and their Big 3 of All Stars over the next half decade.

Florida Marlins, MLB Baseball Team

A great choice for baseball fans in Miami is to look at the Florida Marlins. The team has played in Miami since their beginning in 1993, and they have played well. In that span, the team has won both the 1997 and the 2003 World Series titles. The Marlins takes the field in Miami at Sun Life Stadium, a field that they share with the Dolphins. Starting in 2012, the team will in future be known as the Miami Marlins instead of the Florida and will play in their own brand new stadium, the Miami Ballpark.

Miami Dolphins, NFL Football Team

The NFL’s Miami Dolphins are the oldest major league sports team in Miami, and have enjoyed amazing levels of success during their reign. Their 1972 squad stands as the one and only team to go undefeated during a regular season and then win the Super Bowl. The Dolphins have 1 or 2 Hall of Fame coach and player inductees in their history, most particularly Don Shula and famous quarterback Dan Marino. The Dolphins success has been limited over the course of the past decade, but the team has made strides in recent history. In 2008, they won the AFC East divisional title and made the playoffs.

Miami Heat, NBA Basketball Team

The most well-liked sports team in Miami at this time, the Heat were founded in the 1980s and have been quite successful over the past decade. After drafting Dwyane Wade in the early 2000s, the team has had some extremely successful seasons, having won the NBA Championship at the end of the 2005-06 season. After two of seasons of inadequacy, the Heat returned to the Finals at the end of the 2010-11 season, narrowly losing to the Dallas Mavericks. The catalyzing agent for the Miami Heat’s latest success has been the “Big 3″: A combination of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. The threesome of All-Stars is the reason that the Heat look like the favorites to win the Eastern Conference again once the lockout ends.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers, NASL Soccer Team

There are not as many offerings as in other sports when it comes to soccer in Miami. There had been an Major League Soccer team in Miami called the Miami Fusion. Nevertheless the Fusion folded several years ago. After the team left the league, there has been a void of premiere soccer clubs in Miami. The closest choice is the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The Strikers play at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is a relatively short 30 minute drive from Miami. For now, this NASL club is the most suitable option for spectators who need to watch higher level in Miami or in the area.

George Andrews has been fascinated by baseball in Miami for a number of years. He has written op-eds and editorial pieces for many online publications, which can be read here.
