Original thinking is a good thing. Over the past few decades, mobile stereos have generally come in one basic design. While sizes could vary, you were primarily looking at a 7 inch by 2 inch by 6 inch box lying flat. CD players and cassette tapes were the norm back then so the design was dependent on the size of the mechanisms.

These days, CDs are being phased out of the marketplace and more and more people are using digital devices such as iPods and MP3 players and also iPhones and smart phones. With the CD and tape player gone, you can not only change the shape of the stereo, but perhaps even make it more functional.

Aquatic AV has taken this concept and run with it. The AQ-DM-4U marine stereo is definitely worth a look. This unit is designed around your digital media device, providing a waterproof dock with a sealed door with a 7″ x 5″ mounting footprint. Actually, it is called a digital media locker by Aquatic themselves.

Your iPod will fit inside the locker where it is sealed and protected from the elements, completely waterproofed. The transparent dock door makes it easy to see what is going on with your iPod as it plays. Adjust volume, mode, change songs and the like with the controls on the door exterior without getting your device wet.

In addition the AQ-DM-4U comes with a waterproof wired remote control that gives you all the same controls. You don’t need lign of site for this remote because it is RF (radio frequency) rather than IR (infra red). The remote signal penetrates through walls and other obstructions and there is no need to aim it. It also floats, which is handy for use in a pool or hot tub or while swimming next to your boat.

The stereo has an on board 288 watt, 4 channel amplifier. You can power up to 8 speakers with the built in amplifier because it is stable at 2 ohms. Just put 2 speakers on each of the 4 channels wired in parallel.

It is also compatible with virtually any handheld digital device through the USB port. iPods and iPhone work with it since it has the Apple software built in. It is also compatible with other smart phones and MP3 players.
