More Than 70% Of Drivers Unaware Of New Tyre Labelling

In a survey carried out by OnePoll of 3,000 UK drivers it discovered that more than 70% of folks do not know anything about the new European Union tyre labelling legislation. The survey also highlighted just about all motorists do not understand the impact tyres can have on their overall fuel consumption. It also showed that more than 50% of motorists still consider the up-front cost over long term savings when it comes to buying their tyres. The One Poll survey also shows that less than 20% of motorists will take fuel use and longer terms cost saving into account when buying new tyres.

There is no question that tyre labelling is an important thing for the GB tyre market and it will help drivers make a rather more educated choice when it comes to choosing their new tyres. However will the people that put cost first be ready to pay more for better performing and more fuel efficient tyres as with tyres you get what you pay for.

In truth this new tyre information has not actually penetrated outside the tyre industry and will take time before the buyer becomes genuinely conscious of it. When that does happen it is going to be critical that there’s a lot of free info available so people can understand what it all means. The AA has praised the labelling system but has seen very little interest in it from the car owning community. Tyres are a distressed purchase so will drivers really care enough to take a look at this system in extensive detail.

The label system is really easy to understand with color coded graphics so anybody will be able to follow. It shows the tyre performance in the wet, fuel efficiency and road noise. However it is worth mentioning there are many other criteria that tyres are tested for the label does not cover so this is not the entire picture on every tyre.

The survey found that 65% of drivers would use the new labelling system to help reach a decision re the tyres they purchase. It has still to be seen actually if that’s true when it comes to really spending their hard earned money. It is going to be interesting to find out how the GB tyre market evolves with the impending tyre labelling implementation. Will it change habits or will cost still be the driver when it comes down to purchasing tyres.
