I’m not a pack-rat.
Or at the very least I didn’t THINK I was considered a pack-rat.
That is till my family and I determined to move out of the home where we had spent the previous six years.
There are four of us total – myself, my man and 2 young boys. Between us, we shared a five bedroom home, but made a decision to move into a three bedroom place across the city.
Surveying all our possessions ahead, I did not understand precisely how much stuff we had gathered over the past six years or so. There were bags of kids ‘ play toys that were sitting in our basement, racks of clothing we hadn’t worn in years, sports gear that was getting dusty in the garage, and heaps more things we had just about forgotten about.
While 1 piece of my brain was pronouncing to just get shot of it all and drop it off at the nearest donation box, I just couldn’t do it.
Sure, there were some things that we hadn’t employed in quite a few years, but there’s often long shot that we will need it in the future. Besides, we continue to had to work out what to do with the stuff we definitely wanted to keep – stuff like old photographs, the vintage furniture my parents gave us and the kid’s drawings.

One day while I was talking to a pal, she recommended I research getting one of those self storage shipping containers. Bingo! It was perfect!
So I called up the first shipping container hire company and found out just how easy it was. I did not realise it at first, but they’ll bring the container to your home and transport it to their storage location. All I had to do was put all my effects into the boxcar and they took care of the rest. It was great not being forced to fret about loading a wagon and driving it myself. It was only one less thing on the moving “to-do” list.
We did not have to lose our things just because we did not have space in our new home. Plus, there was so much room in there that we had space left over.
In reality my husband is considering purchasing a motorbike and storing it in our container. The boxes are strong and safe, so he won't have to stress about anyone messing with his new toy or it getting ruined by the weather.
So I admit, I’d be a tiny bit of a pack-rat. I might keep things for many years. I could have things I do not really use each day.
But hey, don’t we all have a little bit of a pack-rat in us?
At least now I have found an answer!
